My students are English language learners (ELLs) and have the challenge of learning a new language while in Middle School. I work with students that are newcomers and have VERY limited exposure to English.
My students are from all over the globe- Nepal, India, Iran, Yemen, Vietnam, just to name a few.
They are newcomers, meaning they have less than one year in the United States. My students face all of the obstacles a typical Middle School student would face, but they cannot speak English! I am in constant awe of my students' abilities to express themselves with gestures, but want to empower them with words! These students are immersed in core subjects and are expected to follow grade appropriate content. I work with these students for 60 minutes everyday and have discovered that we do not have enough dictionaries in their native languages.
My Project
Having dictionaries in their native languages would allow my students to follow along with their English speaking peers. It would also allow us to create high frequency word flashcards- with English on one side and their native language on the other. It is our classroom goal that these students speak, read, and write fluently within three years of being in our ESL/Bilingual program.
Your donation would make a difference in the lives of these students because you would be supporting their English acquisition.
You would be giving them the words they need to succeed not only academically, but also in their daily lives.
