Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Most high school teachers will agree: it can be hard to motivate teenagers to read books! It is even harder to motivate English language learners (most of whom are new to the country) to read leisurely.
This project will provide books in Spanish and Vietnamese to help address reading hesitation for students new to our country.
By stocking the classroom library with books in students' native languages, I hope to encourage teenagers to feel comfortable picking up a book to read leisurely. The goal of this project is to provide a sense of belonging, representation, and security in the school setting for new immigrants. It is easy for these students to shut down and not embrace the learning process when everything is in a new language. This multi-language classroom library will help create a bridge for these students as they begin to acquire reading skills in English.
