We are a community of fourth graders, within the School District of Philadelphia, who are very eager to learn.
Our classroom consists of 32 students, a few of which receive special education services, as well as students who are struggling, English-speaking learners.
Being an urban school setting, 100% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunches which means many of my students do not have the resources or tools at home to help reinforce their learning.
Research shows that people remember 20% of what they hear, 30% of what they see, and 50% of what they hear AND see. Being able to properly utilize the SmartBoard and projector in my classroom, will allow my ESL students to see and listen to topics from a wider and deeper angle.
My Project
We are very fortunate to have a SmartBoard and projector in our classroom. However, we are in desperate need of the adaptor ports which allows us to properly use the board. My ESL students heavily rely on this board as it allows me the opportunity to project visual aids, which helps enhance learning. These visuals allow my students to connect with the lessons by helping with the inclusion process, specifically those with language barriers. No two learners are alike. Using this technology is an effective tool in reaching the diverse learners in my class. It serves as an interactive and motivational tool of learning that allows my ESL students to become more engaged in their learning process. Instruction comes alive by making abstract concepts more concrete.
Visual aids bring the outside world into the classroom, and therefore allow my ESL students to make more of a connection with the content being presented to them.
None of this is possible without the adaptor and external drive we need to properly run our SmartBoard. A pencil sharpener is a must in every classroom so that all students are properly prepared and engaged in each lesson. Wash tape is a great tool for ESL students, as it allows them to color code their notebooks and notes. The materials we are requesting are needed for our ESL students. These materials will help provide interest and motivate my students while increasing retention of information and learning.
