Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are inspired by the subject of Native Americans and yearn to learn more!
My students come from families from all over the world--Vietnam, Mexico, Philippines, and Ethiopia just to name a few!
They all come to my classroom to learn English for 45 minutes everyday. We call it "the language lab" to make it a positive place where they feel comfortable to discuss and share important topics in a small group and a safe and inclusive setting. Fortunately at our school we honor each other's cultures and languages, and many of the students also have the opportunity to learn Spanish.
My Project
The challenge we have now is finding enough books to share and read together in Spanish and English! An important Social Studies concept is learning about Native Americans. We have all become fascinated by the topic and have already exhausted all the books in our small library. I have already spent 500 dollars of my own money to provide books for them and have ran out of paper trying to copy books for them. If we had these books, we could have expert groups and share all the facts we learn with each other in a whole group. They could learn about Native Americans from many different perspectives: past, present, fiction, non-fiction, legends, and in Spanish! They also learn about Native Americans in their homeroom classes, therefore they will feel like the expert and want to share what extra information they know from their ESL class or "the language lab."
Please help us by providing the books we need to learn language and become an expert on a relevant and important theme in our world!
My students will be inspired to learn more by having their own copy of the book with color pictures (which is much better than my black and white copies, especially for language learners!) This will also aid them when they are sharing their thinking with their partner, classmates, and teachers. They will also be able to take the books home!
