Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a Title I school in the panhandle of Texas. My school has 97% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. On average, I have about 16 to 20 students in my classroom. The students I serve have traits that make them unique.
My students come from all sorts of backgrounds, and many are first-generation students like I am.
This year, my smallest class has 14 students. In the past 8 months, we have come a long way as learners and as friends to others.
We work hard every day to apply new skills and push ourselves to new levels. We never say anything given to us is "hard" but rather "it's challenging." My students know they will face challenges throughout the school year, and, as a class, we try to enforce a positive mindset.
This particular group of students comes with more background knowledge than past groups. I am excited to up the rigor of our learning and find new ways to engage them. We continue to explore our learning through escape rooms and room transformations.
My Project
STAAR season is in full swing and I want my students exposed to the test in an intriguing way.
These materials will help the students feel immersed in a new environment they must elude from by problem solving in math, reading, and writing.
The backdrops will help students visualize this scenario, they must escape from. For example, the sharks will help students feel as if sharks have invaded the classroom and they must free themselves of them by solving a series of problems. The lights will help add to the ocean scenery. The flashlights will help students solve with the lights off, which just makes it even more fun. They are put into a scenario where we lose power and the flashlights help in creating it.
All these materials will really intrigue my students and they won't even realize how much learning is happening. Even without these materials and an escape room scenario, they are already so engaged. However, I don't want them to get tired of the same scenario and would love to expose them to different types.
