My Students
The author Leo F. Buscaglia once said, "The person who risks nothing does nothing, has nothing, is nothing, and becomes nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he simply cannot learn and feel and change and grow and love and live." As a teacher of Reading Intervention at the high school level, many of my students are frustrated and jaded from almost a decade of struggling in school. The risks they took in the earlier years of their education often embarrassed them in front of their classmates, and they have decided that their roles in the classroom are limited to silent wallflower or distracting class clown.
Beneath this fear of repeated failure are creative, opinionated students with unique, and often challenging, life experiences.
These ninth, tenth, and sometimes eleventh graders, although reading between two to eight years below grade level, require a class to learn and practice skills and strategies for reading. Many of my students have IEPs or ESL, and unfortunately that often means that their schedule limits them from creative electives. It has become part of my mission to give my students creative, risk-taking opportunities within the confines of my reading curriculum.
My Project
For the past two years, my Reading Intervention classes have researched, designed, built, and run escape rooms for our high school teachers and students. These rooms have evolved from paper riddles hidden around a portion of the classroom to acquiring an empty office with more intricate puzzles and props that have challenged even veteran escape room enthusiasts in our building. In an effort to legitimize the rooms and create more excitement for problem solving, we require several materials. First, a security camera with night vision will to allow students to view players during the game in order to provide appropriate hints and assist in effective game flow, as well as provide adult supervision to an otherwise private room. The 64GB Flash Memory disk will allow for games to be recorded an analyzed for game improvements.
Aside from safety and logistics, my students' escape rooms would improve greatly with a few exciting escape room props.
The Digital Countdown Timer will create the anticipation and excitement during game play for the players. The durable DaVinci Code Cryptex is a unique place to conceal clues, and it will last through multiple games. The American Lock will allow students to lock drawers on the desk that is located in our escape room. The black light can be used to locate hidden messages. Finally, the clear PVC piping and magnets will allow students to build a puzzle that hides a key in one section of the piping and uses the magnets to move that key to an open area for retrieval. While these materials may seem minor, having access to these options will provide students with more opportunities for innovation and creative problem solving.
