My Students

As the technology teacher at our school, I see students that are eager and excited about the possibilities that technology can offer. Our school is unique in that it only serves students in the 4th and 5th grades. I see all 450 students in my lab on a weekly basis. These students come to us from a variety of economic backgrounds. Of the 4th and 5th grade students that we serve, 46% are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.

Our location next to a military base offers a unique opportunity to serve students that have one or both parents serving in the military.

At any given time, our students are dealing with situations that are unique to military families, such as deployments.

Our population is not only varied in their economic backgrounds, they are also very diverse in their academic backgrounds. Of our 420 students, 34% currently hold IEPs or IAPs.

My Project

Breakout EDU games cover many topics that allow students to work together using problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and collaboration to solve problems in many different subject areas. End of unit reviews can be boring.

I would love to bring Breakout games into our STEAM lab to make those reviews more exciting and increase collaboration in our classroom.

During a Breakout game, students are given a task to work through, as well as a time limit to complete that task in. Students must work together, communicating their ideas to one another and cooperate to complete these tasks. By using these games, students are not only working on the academic skills that need to be reviewed, they are also working on necessary social skills.
