My Students
Remember the magic of science class when you were growing up? Physics opens up a world of wonder and excitement for young minds. While learning important concepts, we get to have fun with the coolest toys in school.
My students come from very diverse backgrounds; I try to instill a sense of wonder and awe in science.
The magic of Physics comes alive in my room with interactive projects, hands-on labs, and mind blowing demos that reveal deep misconceptions most of us have about how things work. On the first day of school my students work together to try to understand how Lenz' Law works (without ever having been taught the concept). It's amazing to see the ideas that sprout forth on that first day. From then on, they are constantly challenged and must defend their positions with evidence.
My Project
I want to give my students the joy and excitement of working together against the clock while trying to solve a complex series of puzzles. I was introduced to Breakout Edu (look it up online) in an in-service day before our school year began. All of these high school science teachers were in groups and we had a mysterious locked box in front of us. It had 4 or 5 different locks on it (a word lock, padlock, combination locks, etc.). We had to solve puzzles to gain access to unlocking each lock. Finally we could open the box after successfully solving each step. The excitement in the room was palpable and in the frenzy of working, I looked around and every teacher was completely engaged. I want that type pf experience in my classroom for my students. It's not something we would do all the time, but might be a great treat a couple times each quarter or so. I can also lend it out to the other teachers in my department.
My students will work in small teams to solve puzzles to unlock solutions to a main mystery all the while trying to beat the 45 minute clock.
I have seen this work first hand and I know my students will gain insight into new problem solving strategies by working through the activities. Again... google Breakout Edu to see what I am proposing here. You will be amazed!
