My Students
Do you remember how exciting it is to receive a gift? You feel anxious and excited as you open the box and remove the paper only to see a stack of brand new, beautiful books. Appealing covers that hold secrets and a whole new world to travel to. This is how I want my students to feel every day.
I previously taught 4th grade.
This is my first year as a 6th grade teacher in a brand new school. What better gift to present to my eager students than a box of books? These Truman Award Nominee books and their sequels will allow my students to travel to worlds they can only imagine, and some worlds very similar to their own. With the Truman Award Nominee books, my students will meet characters who face similar situations that they too will face at this age.
My Project
My students will be given 15 minutes every day to read from the Truman Award Nominee books. They will participate in reading logs, literature circles, and discussions. Once a quarter, students will complete a project presenting their book in a fun and interesting way. After reading a minimum of four Truman books, my students will be able to cast their vote for their favorite and see how their vote matches up to other 6th-8th grade students in the area.
As I've mentioned, these books will allow my students to escape to another world.
The best part of reading for me has always been using my imagination and visualizing stories as I read them. I can only hope that these Truman Award Nominee books will allow my students do have those same experiences.
