My students need stream tables to learn and understand about the affects of erosion on the environment. This will be a lasting experience on how water helps shapes land.

My Students
My school is in a city along the Mississippi, which gets flooded every summer. The use of stream tables will help them understand how human intervention has led to more and larger floods in recent years. They will also learn ways to prevent future flooding.
The students live in a poor section of town and they have little resources.
At our school 83% of our students receive free or reduced lunches. Many of the students come to school tired each day due to the family responsibilities they must take on at home. They have to look after their younger siblings, sometimes prepare meals and get them ready for school the next day. They respond to and learn more when they can immerse themselves in the learning.
My Project
These stream tables will give the students the opportunity to problem solve situations that may face in the future in our town. The hands-on interaction with erosion, flooding, and hydrology could open their world to environmental careers when they get into high school and college.
I try to have my students become aware of environmental issues that are destructive.
These stream tables can raise that awareness. Students are more engaged when they can learn through real life scenarios. It makes them question why things work the way they do and causes them to ask: "What if we try this...". The more ownership they have in the learning, the longer the knowledge is maintained. This will help them with real life problems as they get older.
