Erasing Erosion in our Garden! (Disney Challenge Project!)
My students need rocks and soil resource kits to understand how soil is formed. My students also need a model stream to watch and understand the forces of erosion.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Maxey's classroom raised $736

My Students
"If you want truly to understand something, try to change it." My students understand how plants grow. My students don't understand why our garden loses it's precious soil and why not all of our plants grow in the soil available. My students want to stop this erosion so our garden can flourish!
I teach students that are learning English.
That is who I work with every day; the English Language Learners. I work with students in FOUR different grade levels. We all live in an urban community that does not always hold reading and writing to the appropriate respect level. My students come from homes where English is not spoken or read.
Of my students, some are receiving Special Education services. Some are receiving Gifted Services. Some have a diagnosis of ADD and ADHD. They are all learning at different levels and in different ways.
I don't want my students to look at the language barrier as something they will never overcome. I want to fill them with motivation and determination to push full steam ahead with learning!
My Project
I am requesting rocks and rock resources. My students need to understand the earth and what makes up the earth's surface. My students need to see how rocks are formed and then weathered away to create the soil we see and use in our garden.
I am requesting a soil formation kit so my students can see the different types of soil and how the soil we see every day is created. I am also requesting a model stream table to be able to allow the students to build, monitor and experience erosion of soil by running water. The students will gain knowledge, make connections, and draw conclusions about erosion, weathering and deposition from these invaluable materials.
All of these resources together will create a first-hand experience of what we see happening in our gardens.
We are planting in improper soil and our precious top soil is being eroded away from our plants. My students need to understand WHY this is happening so they can start to hypothesize how to stop it.
