What keeps cooperative learning from becoming chaotic in my classroom? Structure, equal participation, and individual accountability!
When every student is actively engaged, there’s simply no time for misbehavior—learning takes center stage and productivity soars.
That’s why I rely heavily on tools that foster real-time participation. For years, individual dry erase boards have been a go-to. They're fantastic for quick checks for understanding, collaborative problem-solving, and active engagement in every subject area.
But now, it's time for an upgrade: reusable LCD writing tablets.
These tablets offer all the benefits of dry erase boards—plus some major advantages. There's no need for erasers, paper towels, or constantly replacing dried-out markers. They're cleaner, more durable, and better for the environment. Best of all, students love using them, which makes them even more effective at keeping engagement high.
One of my favorite cooperative learning strategies is a game called “Showdown.” In this activity, each student works out a problem individually on their board or tablet, then reveals their answer to their team. The team discusses any differences, resolves misunderstandings, and celebrates success together. It’s structured, inclusive, and holds every student accountable—hallmarks of great cooperative learning.
