Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Can you imagine being mesmerized by a computer but unable to use it because you cannot use a mouse or joystick? My students face this every day. A touchscreen is a very intuitive interface through which they can access cause and effect programs, communication software, and social skills programs.

My students would benefit immensely from the implementation of improved assistive technology in the classroom that a touchscreen iPad Pro, and projector would provide.

Some of my students face challenges caused by cognitive delays, communication delays, limited fine motor control and visual and hearing impairments. They face these challenges with determination and grace, by working hard on their goals and making tremendous progress this school year. This technology would give them the opportunity to learn and be trained to explore their world independently through access to a computer via a touch screen.

Multiple studies have shown how children as young as 18 months will intuitively reach out and touch a computer screen. This natural interface cuts down the amount of time a child will spend on learning the mechanics of a computer and get to the business of learning. In addition, many of my students have limited use of their hands, lacking fine motor control. The direct selection on screen will provide instant feedback and greater involvement in the tasks at hand, effectively eliminating the step of learning to use a mouse. The larger screen size, along with built-in accessibility options, will enable our visually and hearing impaired students to have better access. Motivation and time on task will improve and increase. Having a touch screen computer in the classroom will give all of the students the ability to access the miraculous world of learning through their fingertips.
