Our student body of eight hundred seventy 7th and 8th grade students is comprised of 42% Filipino, 22% Native Hawaiian, and a mix of Japanese, Samoan, Hispanic, White, and Black students. Fifty percent of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch and are considered "at-risk" by the State of Hawaii - making it critical that we engage and support this population.
My public school students are diversely beautiful and embody everything that makes our state and nation great.
We learn so much from each other: culture, food, traditions, and holidays. New learning builds awareness, understanding, and strong communities. If you engage the students, support the families, and invite the community to see what you're all about, everyone thrives.
My Project
As a middle school teacher, you know the signs. When a student is trying to check their pants, wrapping a sweatshirt strategically around their waist, or asking friends for supplies, teachers catch on quick. Students are mortified, but they shouldn't be.
Half the people on earth have periods; periods are natural and normal and do not deserve to be stigmatized.
We know that middle school students can have irregular menstrual cycles, and therefore might not always have the appropriate products available. We also know that these products can be an added expense for certain families, or fall on the student themselves.
Recently, New Hampshire passed a bill declaring that menstrual supplies will be provided to students in school. While we're not at that place yet in Hawaii, I'd like to provide period care packs of menstrual products for my students when they need them. Each menstrual care pack will contain a tampon, pad, and wipe in an opaque bag.
Giving to this project helps my kids, and it will advocate for menstrual equity. Thanks for reading and supporting DonorsChoose.org!
