Help me give my students a library that reflects their diverse lived experiences, and inspires a classroom of advocates for equity, social justice and inclusion.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In many urban communities, students are not supplied with the same tools, materials and accessibility found in more affluent areas. My students are growing to be lifelong learners, and they are in need of opportunities to support them in becoming curious, scientifically minded learners!
My third graders are bright, loving, and most importantly - unstoppable in their quest to be successful.
Their families sought out our charter school and put their most valuable young people in my classroom. The parents are confident in my abilities as a teacher and with these new relationships and community connections, I enter my room more prepared and driven to provide my students with the supplies which they need.
My Project
A classroom library is the source of many learning opportunities for students on a daily basis: choosing books that interest them, browsing new titles that might stretch their thinking, and offering a space for a reflection of their own lived experiences.
A library that reflects the lives and experiences of students is a library that offers diverse and inclusive titles.
These titles lend themselves to thoughtful and necessary classroom discussions so that all students have an opportunity to engage in dialogues around equity, justice and inclusion.
These titles will support my students as they become advocates for inclusion, equity and social justice.
