Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our classroom thrives on movement and collaboration. As part of a Building Thinking Classrooms (BTC) model, my students spend most of their time solving problems on vertical whiteboards, building both language and mathematics skills. But when it’s time for individual assessments or quiet reflection, they need a space to sit and focus—something we currently lack. This project will provide lightweight, portable TV trays that can be set up quickly for students who need stable workspaces.

My school serves a primarily Hispanic student population, many of whom are first-generation learners navigating a system not designed for them.

Racial equity in education means more than curriculum; it means shaping classroom structures that affirm students’ dignity, accommodate their needs, and reflect their lived realities. Our students need extra supports that don't hinder their success in the math-curriculum.

Historically, rigid classroom models have contributed to opportunity gaps by ignoring the cultural and individual needs of Black and Brown students. When students don’t understand classroom language, learning becomes even more challenging. Our BTC structure makes thinking visible and collaborative, but it’s not complete without inclusive assessment practices.

Flexible seating ensures that students who may not thrive in a vertical, high-stimulation environment still have an equitable path to success. Whether due to discomfort, anxiety, neurodiversity, or needing quiet space to think, providing seating is one small but powerful way to affirm that every learner matters.

How the Trays Will Be Used:

-To create instant seated workspaces for assessments in a BTC-environment

-To accommodate students with learning differences

-To ensure comfort/focus during state assessments

-As part of a classroom culture that respects student choice and identity

Your support helps build a learning space where equity is practiced. An investment in a classroom where every student, especially those historically underserved, has a place to think, grow, and shine.
