Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As an educator committed to continuous growth, I believe that the most powerful professional development often begins with reading. The books I’ve selected will challenge my perspectives, deepen my instructional practice, and equip me to create a more equitable, engaging learning environment for all of my students.

With Open Middle Math: Problems That Unlock Student Thinking, I will expand my ability to implement rich, open-ended tasks that push students beyond rote procedures.

These types of problems will help me foster deeper conceptual understanding and encourage students to develop their own reasoning strategies—building confidence and perseverance in math.

Books like Punished for Dreaming and Other People’s Children will help me critically reflect on the systemic challenges my students—many of whom come from historically marginalized communities—face every day. These texts will guide me in being more culturally responsive and intentional in how I support, engage, and advocate for my students.

By engaging with both math-specific and broader education texts, I will grow into a more thoughtful, reflective, and informed educator. The insights I gain will directly influence my curriculum design, the conversations I foster in my classroom, and the relationships I build with students and families. Ultimately, this investment in my professional learning will help me better serve my students—not only as a math teacher, but as a mentor, advocate, and ally.
