Equipping Minds for the Future: A Multisensory Approach with Orton-Gillingham

I need intermediate training for Orton Gillingham through IMSE to best support my students in literacy and Reading.

My Students

I am blessed to teach with diverse and unique students daily. My students work hard and we celebrate their accomplishments, but many of them still struggle in the areas of reading, writing, and vocabulary. We work daily on these skills to close academic gaps they have developed. As they age, these gaps will become bigger unless some research-based methods are implemented to help them better understand these skills.

I strive to engage my students in all types of multisensory activities when they are with me to make learning fun and make it stick.

I encourage them to read and share what they learn with me and others. Most of them are from low socioeconomic families and do not have anyone at home to read with them in English. Many are 2-3 grade levels or more behind in reading. They need systematic, hands-on instruction in understanding the English language to become better readers and writers. I want to inspire them and fill their toolbox with strategies they need to be successful in reading. The ability to read empowers everyone! If students can read, the possibilities for them are endless.

My Project

This professional development will equip me to teach reading through a research-based, multi-sensory approach. Orton-Gillingham training is provided through IMSE, an institute accredited by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA). IMSE follows the IDA's Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teachers of Reading.

A multi-sensory approach makes reading more engaging for all children, not only those with dyslexia.

It helps them become better readers using all of their senses. This approach, along with practice and repetition, helps students retain and recall information. This approach is proven to work with struggling readers and helps to fill in the skill gaps.
