I teach Pre-K -5th grade PE, and my goal is to have children moving while being happy about what they are doing. We work hard to get healthy and smart at the same time, bringing in the reading, math, geography, science, and other life skills into our games as well.
My students are majority low income, 92% of my school is on free and reduced lunch.
All students in the school receive a free breakfast. Most of our students live in apartment buildings and do not have access to a safe play space. My students represent 32 different countries around the world.
My Project
The balance beam would be one of our gymnastics stations during the unit. Students can practice their balance by walking front, side, backward, doing little jumps and kicks, and then jumping off then end for their big finish.
Right now we borrow from another school to practice volleying, we would be able to use volleyballs through the year for volley practice rather than waiting for only the times we can borrow.
The whistles would be used by all 3 PE teachers to help maintain order, referee the games, make transition heard, etc.
These students have very little that is nice, and what they do have is often borrowed and they know they have to give it back.
It would be nice for them to be proud of something that belongs to them, using their own equipment and learning from it. This equipment would add to the options the students and therefore expand their learning.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
