Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

On a typical day both the APE teacher and myself have to beg for equipment for our class. Most days we operate with much less equipment than is needed and none of the equipment is designed to help our students with special needs in obtaining the necessary skills to play with their gen ed. peers.

My students live in a very urban area of Los Angeles, where 34% are living in poverty.

Many of my students come from single family homes or live with extended family who are working two jobs to make ends meet. As my students' families live with these challenges it means that most of the physical activity my students receive happens during the day in class. The students know my class is a safe space for them to build community, learn about others, and build relationships with students who have different needs. Our school struggles to provide equipment for the general education PE classes, so trying to get adapted PE equipment (for kids with different needs) is next to impossible. My students need softer manipulative objects to work on skills without getting hurt. Taking away the fear of being hurt will give my students the energy they are lacking to participate with their general education peers.

My Project

The adapted physical education equipment will allow my students with special needs to perform the same tasks as their general education peers. Using softer soccer balls will allow them to work on their defensive skills, as they mostly duck out of the way currently. Using lighter basketballs will allow them the strength to shoot at the normal height hoop. Providing them with cups stacking equipment will allow my students with walkers the chance to build coordination skills. Having access to bean bags will give my students the opportunity to work on their throwing and catching skills without the anxiety of getting hit by the baseball. Hula hoops will be used as cardiovascular equipment for my students who struggle with running because of leg braces, or bone/muscle deficiencies. Hula hoops are also great to use in community building games such as tag, obstacle courses, and relay races. All of the equipment together will provide opportunity to learn, grow, and excel, without fear.

This equipment will make a difference in my class because we will be able to better lesson plan knowing what we have, and what we can use.

There will be more opportunities provided for inclusion with the addition of this new equipment because all students will have equal access to their necessary equipment needs. More games will be played as an entire group and no student will have to feel left out. A stronger community will be built and even gen ed students with weaker skills will benefit.
