I teach severely handicapped elementary school students in a rural town in North Carolina. The families our school serves do not have much money, and due to their extenuating circumstances, the families of my specific students have even less. It is oftentimes a struggle to get to school each day (illnesses, long car trips - as my classroom is unique in its service to the severe/profound population). My students, esspecially my group with Autism, benefit greatly each day from a sensory diet. Certain activities, including the use of therapy balls, putty, or sand, cause sensory stimulation which helps my students to either relax or motivate depending on thier individual needs. I am proposing a horseback riding excursion to a theraputic riding program, a program specifically designed for children with special needs. The students benefit greatly not only from the sensory stimulation, but from other aspects of the activity as well including community and social involvement, physical activity, and general recreation. I have previous experiance with taking special needs students to this program in the past, and there is no better feeling for me as a teacher to see the smiles and laughter of my students during such a beneficial activity.
