My Students

Remember the question - when will I ever use that? Using iPads and the DESMOS program I wants student to see how they can manipulate math equations to make art, to design schematics, to fit equations to data collected.

Students are motivated to learn and to compete, but not all students have the technology available.

The school has many students that have access, making those that do not unlikely to speak up. There are always students who do not have a phone they can use and therefore cannot participate without my intervention. It is these students I need to support with technology when we use programs like DESMOS or KAHOOT. I use KAHOOT to review concepts in a game format. I use DESMOS to learn about equations.

My Project

Each chapter, when we cover particular equations, be it linear or quadratic, I would like students to manipulate the general form to discover what the coefficients do. Then I would like them to build a design or art piece with the equations. This project will be ongoing to include logarithmic and trigonometric equations. At the end of the course students can use all they learned to fit equations to data collected and to make inferences or to create works of art with moving parts.

Using technology and game theory I hope to engage students, have them discover and ENJOY math.

Students will discuss and ask others for ideas based on math topics. They will improve on art projects, they will investigate how fast a virus can infect... Having technology and programs like DESMOS available is a very exciting time in math, making us have a chance to reach students that were previously turned off to mathematics.
