Help me give my students the opportunity to read diverse books to help them learn of the inequalities around us.

My Students
Each day my high school students start class by sitting and reading for 10 minutes. They usually get books form our high school library or my small classroom library. However, while we will be meeting in person for school, borrowing books will look different. Students love the chance to take a break from their day and read, they tell me it's their favorite part of the day. This year I want to include more books addressing inequalities in an effort to have honest conversations with my students. I want to have 4-5 copies of these books so students can form book groups and have books discussions about the things they're reading while feeling safe not having to all be sharing the same books.
When you put books in the hands of students, you crack open the windows and throw open the doors, allowing students the opportunity to learn for themselves.
Our students thrive when given the opportunity to explore new things and I'm excited to offer them a variety of texts to expand their horizons to what is going on in the world around them.
My Project
George Martin said, “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies . . . The man who never reads lives only one.” If I can offer more books to my students it equals more readers which equals more learning taking place.
Students will have the opportunity to talk about what they are reading and have higher level reader response discussions as they learn more about the people that make up our world through literature.
This will allow antiracist, honest conversations to occur throughout the year. By providing multiple copy of books, reading communities and book groups can be formed, whether in person or online, without the risk of sharing materials.
