This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever not understood something clearly and have looked for other resources to better help you understand? Well I have the unique job of giving my students those extra resources needed to better understand reading, writing, and math. My students are both special education and general ed.
Luis Munoz Marin Elementary School is located in Newark, NJ.
Over 70% of the school population come from low income families, many of the families being single parent homes. Luis Munoz Marin Elementary School also has a rather large Special Education population ranging from Behavioral disturbed to Learning Disabled. There are also a small number of students who are just below grade level and may need one-on-one work with the teacher using other resources in order to bring them to grade level standards.
My Project
Who are my students? My students are either classified Special Education or General Education students who are just below grade level and need supplemental resources to better understand curriculum materials. My classroom will involve small group activities such as: reviewing site words either with flash cards or DVDs, reviewing math skills also with flash cards or DVDs, teacher made activities recorded on a recording device so students can play them back to themselves while in a listening center, teacher made activity sheets made specifically for each individual student and there need. After each session or when homework is turned in students will receive a coin... this coin will lead them to shop in the classroom store at the end of the week; many of my students need extra encouragement since they feel they are different then their classmates. The students will build confidence in various materials leading to better achievements in the classroom.

Studies have showed if a student does not have a strong fundamental basis by 3rd grade the student has a greater chance in struggling in school. WE together can help close this cap and help children in the most opportune time in their path to higher education.
