This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Could you learn in a windowless classroom with polluted air? My students can't either. In 1901, windowless apartments were deemed illegal, for good reason. It's time for our windowless classrooms to get better.
We're a small transfer school for 16-21 year old students in New York who are behind on credits when they join our community.
Our district's high school graduation rate is 32% - so every one of our graduates is beating the odds. Many are caretakers at home, most are first or second generation Americans from the West Indies and Latin America. All are committed to education and getting a high school diploma.
My Project
Donor's choose says to "include a vivid description of how these resources will change your students' lives for the better." I don't think it takes much creativity to explain the necessity of clean air to the American people. It's a shame that we need to be requesting these materials through private donations, but how's this: Though learning and teaching are joyful challenges, breathing shouldn't be. We've noticed a stark rise in asthma, bronchitis and other pollutant-related illness since moving into a different building in September. You will be funding HEPA air filters for 3 windowless classrooms that remove pollutants, improve air circulation and can be cleaned regularly without needing replacement filters. These air filters would greatly reduce the risk to our students' lives.
Your donation will mean our entire school community will be healthier.
That means higher attendance, more learning time, and an ability to focus on intellectual tasks, rather than wondering if students or staff will have an asthma attack in school tomorrow. We can't wait.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
