Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a high poverty school in Chicago that began our school closure on Tuesday, March 17, 2020. Our state wasn't prepared for distance learning and had no solid plan. We were out of school for two weeks and each day was considered an "Act of God" day because our state didn't have an official distance learning plan that was approved by stakeholders.
While our school was closed temporarily for two weeks, I was able to send my students home with a calendar of learning activities as we continued our novel study and our math curriculum.
Our district is not one to one with technology access so I wanted to give my students learning opportunities through having a way to access learning from being at home by having the classroom books that they were familiar with and continuing our structured classroom routine.
As you can probably imagine, it wasn't anticipated that we would be where we are today in that all Illinois schools are closed for the rest of the year and will continue distance learning until the end of June. Finally, all students have devices and now I am able to deliver instruction through a virtual platform.
My Project
My students had a scheduled field trip to LEGOLAND Discovery Center in March that got postponed due to the school closures. They were absolutely devastated and my heart broke for them knowing that we would not be able to attend this field trip together this year.
One of the goals of the field trip was for students to participate in a workshop called "What a Great Experience" where students would take a pile of LEGO bricks and use their imaginations to create their own stories.
I want to surprise my students with a virtual field trip experience by mailing these LEGO brick kits so they can bring their LEGO stories to life virtually while distance learning! I also want to provide enrichment opportunities for students that would like to take it a step further and create their own LEGO movies with LEGO movie kits.
My students will be able to share their LEGO stories with their classmates during our Google Meets sessions and we will be able to have our first virtual field trip as a class! I can't wait to see their creations and their reaction as we bring LEGO stories into our virtual learning journey! This is definitely going to be epic!
