Envisioning STEM for All

I need a trip to the AAAS for a chance to gain recent knowledge about STEM to better support my students.

My Students

As the science teacher, I am charged with finding ways to engage students in a way that helps them learn and appreciate the wonders of science. Our students are unique and come to school seeking more than just an education - they need our support. They have a common story with layers that make a traditional education setting difficult for them. Our students need the constant engagement, challenge, and motivation in order to best function. We recognize that our students need a variety of opportunities to learn and grown. As an alternative public high school, we allow our students to interact in a freer and more creative environment. This allows them to tap into another type of intelligence often ignored in education. Due to social emotional trauma in their lives and interruptions in their education, my students need more than the average student. It requires a great deal of caring and energy to give them what they need to be successful.

My Project

My attendance at the conference will create STEM partnerships and relationships,so that I can connect my students to professionals and organizations that can give them greater exposure to the areas of STEM. These connections can ultimately lead to field trips, mentoring, and additional resources to enhance instruction and student engagement.

Working with a large minority population, the knowledge and resources I will gain will allow expand my ability to provide opportunities for my students to engage in the STEM community.

One of the key issues that my students deal with is identity and equity which is one of the tracks offered at the conference.
