Environmentally Conscious Readers

My students need 12 copies of two books, Flush and Scat, both by Carl Hiassen.

Sixth graders are eager to understand how they impact their world, and even more interested in how it impacts them. Inspired by a recent application to head to Costa Rica to enhance global connectedness and advance environmental stewardship, I'm eager to bring ecological literature into the spotlight. I'm crossing my fingers they accept my application and I get to travel on this trip this summer, and I'm crossing my fingers you'll be interested in helping give our students literature about ecological topics. In our urban school, we have a geology unit about change. How do we affect change and how does it affect us? I'm looking to expand this idea further into a literature study. Carl Hiaasen has written three books, "Hoot", "Flush", and "Scat", to highlight construction companies who overrun animal habitats, casino boats who flush sewage into the harbor, and oil companies who compromise rare species of animals. This book club will enable us to understand literature by the same author and the text connections to our world. The implications the literature has for our understanding of environmental responsibility and activism will be tremendous. Please help us invest in both literacy and the understanding of our world's ecological longevity.
