This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My high school students are primarily minority students from the poorest region of our state. Many of them are from single-parent households without any secondary education.
The majority of my students don't have strong parental support, financial means, or support for higher education.
We have students from military households with one parent deployed and the other filling the void and role of the military parent. Many of them lack the desire to improve the quality of their future. Support from DonorsChoose.org shows my students that people do care about others and are willing to help support them even if they don't know them.
My Project
Our state requires that twenty percent of classroom time be devoted to Lab Projects, Experiments, and Investigation. Hands-on labs are more effective in my class than virtual labs.Ecosystems, Aquatics, Wildlife and Agriculture Science are several topics covered in my class. Students love learning about Water Pollution, Herbicide Resistance, Natural Selection and Animal Tracking. My classes need Lab Kits on Herbicide Resistance, Water Quality, Tracking Animals and Natural Selection. Studying Plants and their nutrients in the lab are fascinating, as is Natural Selection and Antibiotic Resistance via hands-on lab activity. These lab activities seem to reach more student interest. The variety of lab kits and activities that I am requesting will cover several standards and reach most of the students' interests. Over the years, supplies run out, chemicals expire or loose effectiveness and new things are needed. The Next Generation Science Standards will allow teachers to be more in-depth and inspire more scientific thinking and aspirations in our classrooms and labs. Without much-needed lab supplies, kits and ideas, we fail to fulfill the state requirement and our students don't get the hands-on experience of real-life science lab investigations.
