My Project
Our Title One public school is in Los Angeles, CA and over half of our students are living in poverty. Located between a railroad and two freeways, CalEnviroScreen has identified the school as having a 100% pollution burden. Our students are also identified as being part of a disadvantaged community by the California EPA. At our school, students learn through arts-integrated, project-based learning. As such, our Environmental Justice/Science programming is relatively new at the school, with just three years of running the department and hopefully many more years ahead.
Apart from the grant we received that pays the salaries of our program educators, we have no operating budget for supplies.
The goal for this project is to enrich the science experience for our students, grades TK-8th. We look forward to planting seeds and studying decomposer bugs and pollinators with our magnifying glasses! We are eager to dazzle our 8th graders with the owl pellet dissection kit. We can't wait to rebuild our dilapidated garden beds, lining them with chicken wire and protecting them from critters so that our kids can enjoy the fruits of their labor soon! We really hope to also get a trail cam to see which critters are munching on all the fava beans our 5th/6th graders are growing! Gloves and grabbers for our lunch ranger program are important.
Despite our students' adverse circumstances, they are empowered to defend the earth. Students love their gardening lessons so much so that they beg us for time in the garden every single day.
