I teach an amazing group of junior high students who are eager to come to school and excited to learn about science with cutting edge technology and share what they know with their families and our community. I am always looking for new ways to engage my students both in and out of the classroom.
My students are encouraged to explore the environment that is right outside our classroom doors.
Our small rural school district is in Southwest Ohio housed in a building that is almost 100 years old. Some of my students are learning in the same classrooms that their parents and grandparents did and that makes our school a comfortable place for families to gather.
My Project
I want to be able to capitalize on the enthusiasm of my students to be able to use current tools of technology to explore the environment that they live in.
My students have and use smart technology everyday and their interest is peaked when they can use these tools that they have access to in new and unique ways to learn about the world around them.
I want to be able to provide them with 360 cameras and tripods that allow them to use an app called roundme with their smartphones to monitor and capture the world around them in 360 degrees. With these cameras we can look at change over time in our own environment, like local streams and rivers changing course over time, runoff from our farm fields and streambed erosion and deposition. I feel that if my students have these kinds of opportunities to connect to the environment they will want to be citizen scientists and pass their images (data) with time and date stamps onto the next class so we can keep a running record of our real world observations.
