Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a teacher in a low-income, inner-city school region with a large, diverse population. Most of my students are first-generation Americans or immigrant children from a variety of South American countries. My students are faced with many challenges, both in and out of the classroom. Throughout the school year, it is our goal to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion of all! Our school is a Title I schools, which means a school with large concentrations of low-income students.

Many students in our school qualify and enter our school through the Head Start Program, which is available for children who are from families with incomes below the poverty guidelines, children from homeless families, and/or families receiving public assistance.

Some of the students in my classes are special needs students who suffer from attention deficit disorder (ADHD), are ESL students (English as a Second Language) and/or have other types of special needs. Regardless of their challenges though, the majority of the students are very determined and eager to succeed. In spite of their personal experiences, most of my students are very active, enthusiastic learners who possess a thirst for knowledge.

My Project

It is my goal for my students to develop financial literacy skills. After discussing the importance of earning, investing and saving, our kiddos will have the opportunity to become entrepreneurs as they create a printing/labeling/t-shirt making business. Many of my students are talented in the arts and enjoy creating and designing multimedia projects as we engage in STEAM activities throughout the school year. Others excel in science and mathematics and enjoy engineering activities.

Together, our students will make a great team as they focus their talents on establishing a printing/labeling/t-shirt making business within our school using the requested wireless Cricut Joy and accessories.

The kiddos will be engaging in designing and creating customized cards, labels, vinyls and inspirational messages and quotes to post around the school. The merchandise they create will be sold to school staff, teachers, students and families. As they set up their business the students will need to plan and account for the cost of products, as well as fair and profitable sale prices.
