Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a motivated group of 6th, 7th and 8th grade Science students at a Dual Immersion school in California. A high percentage of my students are English Language Learners and come from low-income households. For many of my students, they will be the first in their families to attend college and be bilingual.

Middle school is a springboard for student success in high school and a precursor to college admission and achievement.

I push my students to engage in higher-level thinking and problem-solving. My goal is to inspire these young minds to pursue their dreams in higher education and beyond! Developing literacy and a love for reading is a crucial component of education and my project will support this goal.

My Project

How do I create an enticing and engaging middle school library of books to sell the magic of reading? By creating a student-centered library composed of their top choices and requests. The books I'm requesting for my library include specific requests from my 7th-grade middle school students.

I have witnessed the magic of reading spread through my middle school classroom when one student falls in love with a new book.

The excitement of listening to students share their joy of reading a good book is the inspiration for this project. I want to entice my students to fall in love with books and guide them in discovering the simple joys of getting lost in a story. Plus, I want to have an abundance of new popular titles so that all students can find something to read.

This project will supply new, popular book titles to all middle school students (not just my 7th-grade advisory class). I will openly offer these titles on the honor system both during the school year and during school breaks. Books should be a pleasure to read and a source of enjoyment for Middle School students both in class and at home.
