As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are exposed to several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning.
My students need books from level A-Z,magnetic sight words, book stand and magazines for 3million minutes reading challenge and DEAR TIME (DROP EVERYTHING AND READ)
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical." From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience in school.
This school year our students signed up for the 3 million minutes reading challenge and we wanted to have enough books to read in our classroom library section. We decided to have a 25 minutes DEAR TIME a day. DEAR time is classroom time set aside for teachers and students to Drop Everything and Read. The goal of DEAR is to encourage independent silent reading for extended periods of time on a daily or weekly basis. Students choose the book they wish to read based on interest and ability. Unlimited discoveries and learning using D.E.A.R Time (DROP EVERYTHING AND READ) during independent reading. My students will choose the book they wish to read based on interest and ability.
This school year our students signed up for the 3 million minutes reading challenge and we wanted to have enough reading materials like magnetic sight words, level A-Z books in our classroom library section.
All books and other reading materials will be organized in a book stand.
A daily DEAR program (Drop Everything and Read) provides students with much more than a just-sit-there-and-read experience. It gives the teacher a structured time to touch base with each student over a period of time, assess progress, and target instruction. Even more important, it gives students time to read what they want to read, share what they've read, and receive the support they need for further reading explorations and reflections.
