My students are in the fourth grade. They live in an urban neighborhood that has been declining for many years. Violence and drugs are a part of their daily life. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. Despite my students' background, they come to school every day seeking a safe, caring place to learn. It is my job to provide that place.
My school is labeled a HP school which stands for High Poverty, and we are well on our way to changing the meaning of those letters to High Performing.
We believe in our students and know that they can be successful in school.
The Bricklab Kit will encourage my students to be active participants in learning. Normally the classroom focus is improving students' literacy and writing skills, so the students are encouraged to do a lot of reading. This year I noticed how my students became interested in so many different topics. The students asked really good questions and wanted to explore topics to learn more. They had the opportunity to read and watch videos to answer their questions. Their genuine curiosity was refreshing and inspired me to plan project based lessons.
Every student despite their background deserves the opportunity to engage in exciting, hands on learning experiences to prepare them for college and careers in science, engineering, math, and technology.
These materials will allow my students to take what they learn from reading and make it relevant to their life. For example, they will be able to build simple machines and see how they work for themselves. Even the most reluctant student will be motivated to be involved these class activities.
