Enthusiasm for Outdoor Sports is Catching!

Help me give my students quality baseball gloves to help them build skills and develop confidence to pursue baseball, softball and other outdoor team sports.

My Project

I have been introducing outdoor sports and recreational activities to my students to help them discover both the physical and mental health benefits of engaging in outdoor physical activity, as well as the social benefits of doing so with others. Our neighborhood school shares our outdoor space with a city park. After school hours, many neighborhood residents come to play basketball on our courts or play on the playground. But our large grassy field, which includes a baseball diamond, sees much less use. I want to help spark some passion for field sports to increase opportunities for active play.

Getting kids excited about going outside to play with others has become vitally important, as the alternative of isolating inside on electronic devices has had a devastating impact on mental health.

The opportunity to practice throwing and catching with baseball gloves will help my students grow their skills and their confidence to try new things. In addition to potentially getting involved in an organized team, having the skills and knowledge to organize their own sandlot-style play is an equally enriching opportunity.

All of my students have really been enjoying the bats and batting tees that we recently received. After making a solid hit and sending the ball into the outfield, it was great to hear one of my fourth graders say "Maybe I should sign up for baseball!" While many of my K-2 students have been enjoying the t-ball gloves that we got, it has left my older students asking if I can get some gloves for them to use. I know they will benefit from the inherently social and cooperative nature of learning how to throw and catch with baseball gloves.
