Help me give my students items like file holders, storage containers, and ping pong balls for the tools they need to experiment in design and engineering.
Our third graders are learning to become experimenters, mistake-fixers, reflective thinkers, and goal-reachers as the teachers in our school learn to navigate teaching in a STEM world. I'm an old dog learning some new tricks in teaching kids to use the DESIGN process of engineering. My teammates and I have been working all year on creating STEM-based projects to meet our standards. This includes things like Market Day where students create their own product to market to other grade levels, Force & Motion where students created a variety of simple machines, and Protection from Natural Disasters where kids created posters with diagrams of how to keep yourself safe.
Having the supplies necessary to experiment in our classroom is key to teaching kids these days!
They best become problem-solvers by trying things out on their own, thinking about how to make things better, and finding various ways to solve a problem. We're now working toward some STEM challenges to open our minds to problem-solving in unusual ways, using ping pong balls, craft sticks, tooth picks, pipe cleaners, index cards, and card decks to challenge each other. Having a simple storage system of blue bins for our simple supplies makes using them simple.
We've been accumulating quite a few engineering and scientific books. There are a few we'd like to add to our collection, featuring mainly women in the science world, as well as some book bins to keep our collection organized.
Our third graders come from the neighborhood as well as Peterson Space Force Base nearby. They run the gamut of traveling experiences from never even been across town to visit Garden of the Gods to having lived in three different countries. Having classroom tools to experiment with narrows the playing field for these kids with such varied life experiences.
