Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a low-income neighborhood, where many students struggle with adult issues before ever reaching their teenage years.
My students represent a variety of countries from around the world, including Mexico, Iran, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
While living in a neighborhood where they experience a variety of unspeakable challenges, the adversity they face does not prevent them from coming to school to explore, inquire and create.
All of these resources are chosen in support of the NVACS for Social Studies. Items such as the scissors and Sharpies will allow students to share ideas in support of standards like:
SS.6-8.WGGS.18. (CS) - Investigate Nevada's role in the world using the five themes of geography: place, location, human environment interaction, movement, and region.
SS.6-8.EUSH.13. (CS) - Investigate the factors that shaped group and national identity in early U.S. history in relation to views of American identity today.
SS.6-8.EUSH.14. (CS) - Interpret historical events from a variety of cultural perspectives, including but not limited to: Native Americans vs. settlers, Northerners vs. Southerners, and native citizens vs. immigrants
Project-based Learning is a major component to the lessons and allows students to experience the creative side of learning. These materials (markers, globe, scissors, etc.) will be used to create their own class Constitution, assist in their map creations, and other projects that are used as end-of-unit examinations and continue to create and transform pedagogy so students can learn and thrive.
