My class is a wonderfully diverse mix of multilingual and multicultural students. Students in my classroom are refugees and immigrants from Africa, Mexico, China, Vietnam, the Middle East, Nepal and Central America. My students are English Language Learners with a significant gap (three years or more) in formal education. For some of these students, my class may be their first classroom experience.
Through all their hardships and challenges, these students are active, joyful and excited about learning.
We are a close community of learners who support and encourage each other.
Our district is moving to Google for Education. Classrooms will receive some Chromebooks but our allotment will not allow for a 1:1 ratio. It would be beneficial and more effective if each student could have access to their own Chromebook in the classroom instead of using it in pairs or small groups. Our students will need access to technology daily. Technology in our classroom will provide additional speaking and listening opportunities as these students acquire and increase their English Language abilities.
For these ESL students, the translation opportunities that technology can provide will accelerate their academic achievement, career potential, and cultural acclimation.
These Chromebooks will ensure that these students learn and gain practical computer skills. For their short and long term success in school and career these students will need daily practice in typing, creating documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.
