Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Ms. L's kindergarten classroom is in need of cheering up and organizing. I took on this group of children late in September because our school had so many kinder kids. We were put into a bare classroom with no file cabinets, bookcases or kinder manipulatives for little fingers to learn with.
I have 16 bouncy boys who need something to do all day long and 8 wonderful girls who bounce as much as my boys.
I came down from fourth grade to teach this class and I have all the curriculum from California Treasures and Envision Math, but I have spent my personal budget already just making the room environment kinder friendly. Files are kept in a cardboard box and the children use cardboard boxes with brads for pencils and crayons. Needless to say, the boxes are already wearing out from the tiny fingers grabbing things from them each day. My kids inspire me because they can make a paper clip and a rubber band fun. They love to sing and dance, but phonics is a challenge for them. They haven't had much exposure to alphabetic principals and English is the second language for nine of them. They are using play do, Legos and puzzles in my class, but don't seem to have these items at home. Our school has about 1000 students, is a Title One school and predominantly low income.
My Project
The colorful and sturdy organizers and activities will get my students away from their work books and working with their fingers to explore and learn. I have six tables and need the carryalls to put out the supplies for the day and encourage sharing and independent work. The "Turn In Your Work" organizer goes with the color coded carryalls to improve classroom management and the process of turning in work and moving on to the next task independent of the teacher. The "All About Today "activity pocket chart is bright, safe and kid friendly. It will get the children involved in the calendar, days of the week, weather and more without the teacher leading and lecturing. I love supervising centers and the magnetic numbers and letters are a fun manipulative for the kids to practice what they know and for me to assess them unobtrusively.
These children started with me late in the year in an empty room.
The basics have been provided, but they don't yet have all that the other kinder classrooms have. These precious supplies will improve their environment and make their daily tasks easier and much more fun. We will get more done in a day and enjoy it at the same time.
