Enriching the Learning of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children
My students need aprons for arts & crafts, educational games & counters to support learning, books & bins to read, borders, lamination sheets, and velcro to show projects.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are eager to learn and love hands on materials and visuals to support their learning. At the end of the school year I want to be able to enrich their language and comprehension. They are deaf and hard of hearing so their language and listening skills are lower than other hearing peers.
I have 8 deaf and hard of hearing students, ages 6-8.
They are in 1st and 2nd grade. They are eager to learn, however are at a lower level specifically in reading and writing due to their hearing loss. Their language is expanding, but they still need a lot of support to aid their comprehension and communication skills. My school is a public special ed school, with the majority of the students being emotionally disturbed. There is one other deaf and hard of hearing classroom.
My Project
My students will wear the aprons when making art projects. They will use the books to read and expand their reading skills, and the book bins to put the books away in on the shelf. They will use the educational games, Pop and Add to 20, Boggle Jr, and Place Value Bingo to support their math and vocabulary skills. They will use the bulletin board borders, Velcro, lamination paper to display their work beautifully for everyone to see. My students will be able to expand their skills in all subjects when using these materials and support them in applying the skills during lessons.
The donations to my project will only support my students in expanding their knowledge even more and grow as an individual and even as a learner.
They will have manipulatives, games, and books to support them in using their math and reading skills specifically. The bulletin board borders, letters, Velcro, and lamination will allow my students to display their work nicely and preserve it so they can hold on to it.
