My Students
The world is a complicated place, and for my students even grasping the physical representations of our planet can be daunting. Help us engage with maps, globes, and geography more effectively!
Our school holds grades 7-12 in one building, and my eighth graders are in the process of deciding if they want to stay at the public school or leave for other options nearby.
They enjoy the school, but are influenced by others who tell them they can't succeed at a public school. This pressure is reinforced by a lack of resources and an old building that confirms to them that a public school cannot compete. Many students go elsewhere, leaving our high school with only certain parts of the population. This creates a school that does not reflect our community, and even fosters divisions and ill feelings. Our students and our town need to have faith and pride in our public school again. Engaging and effective resources would go a long way to showing our students that their public school will fight for them and that a public education is something to be proud of.
My Project
Kinesthetic and visual learners are often left behind in our school. Manipulatives are so important in a classroom, and those resources are simply not readily available at our school, particularly for the social studies department. We need globes badly in our school, as they provide a physical representation of the world that my students can engage with and explore. Maps are fantastic, and my student love using them, but their two dimensional presentation of the world leaves many students without a clear grasp of the geography and true nature of our planet. A three dimensional model is much more tangible to many students, and in conjunction with maps and information from the book they are able to explore geography in a much more complete and meaningful way. Please help my more kinesthetic and visual learners understand our world to the fullest!
Access to globes in my classroom would transform the way my students study geography and understand the world around them.
We cannot allow students to perceive the world as flat, static, or disconnected. I truly believe that a more fully developed understanding of the the geography of our planet is the foundation for the abstract concepts we strive to impart throughout their education. Please help me serve all of my students more completely with this basic but necessary resource!
