My Students

I teach English/language arts to more than one hundred seventh grade students. Our school is a Title I school in rural South Carolina where a significant portion of students are below the poverty line.

My classes are composed of both high-achieving gifted and talented students, and struggling students who are often reading below grade level.

Each of these groups has very unique needs in order to be successful, and each group needs encouragement and guidance to reach their individual potential.

My Project

Each year we spend a quarter reading holocaust texts. Finding just the right text for this very important historical time can sometimes be a struggle, especially with a variety of reading levels. When you then consider appropriateness for this age group, the task can be daunting to say the least. I have struggled for years to find just the right text, and I feel like I have finally done that with this book, Prisoner B-3087. Because it is a selection of the South Carolina Junior Book Award List, its appropriateness for the age group is never called into question. This Holocaust novel is engaging, appropriate, and will help give my students a historical perspective that is often lacking when we begin this unit. This book will be one of the options for our Holocaust class novels, and will be used on a daily basis for both independent reading and class discussions. Right now the options I have cater to very high and very low reading levels, but this book will allow students reading on grade-level to have a meaningful reading experience. Having this as a reading option for our Holocaust unit will be a huge benefit to many of my students, and will speak to them in a way that other texts just can not.
