Hi, I am the special education teacher in a first grade inclusion class at P.S. 326 in Brooklyn. I have sixteen children in my class. We are a Title I, early-childhood center. Approximately seventy-five percent of our students receive free lunch.
Nine of the students in my class have been diagnosed with disabilities such as speech delays, emotional disorders, and delays in motor skills. These children, as well as the general education population in my class all benefit from hands on opportunities in the area of mathematics. Allowing them to use manipulatives during math lessons really creates a better grasp of new concepts and solidifies knowledge of old ones.
Math manipulatives also create great opportunities for speech, which would greatly benefit my students who have language delays. Additionally, holding and manipulating these objects allow for practice in fine motor skills, which is needed to help my young students who have weak fingers and hands.
Objects such as Weighted Numbers, a Shop and Play Money Box, Fun to Count Games, and a Follow-the-Pattern Garden Builder Set from Lakeshore Learning Materials would not only teach new math concepts, but act as another form of therapy for my students with special needs.
The best way to teach math is to allow the students to have fun with it. A donation of math manipulatives and games would create such opportunities for the students in my first grade class.
Thank You.
