Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

At my school, many students drop out between ninth and tenth grade; as a ninth grade teacher, therefore, it is critical that I provide my students with a relevant and engaging curriculum in order to keep my kids in school. I teach a full-year ninth grade English class in a high-need, high-poverty school. My students come to me with a wide range of abilities; about 20% are in special education.

At my school, technological resources are limited, making it next to impossible to incorporate them into the classroom. This is a real disservice to my students, especially given that technology is becoming ever-present in our society. Without a way to show media and images in my classroom, it is difficult for me to provide my students with an up-to-date, multifaceted education or to familiarize them with the medium of instruction that they will no doubt one day encounter in a college classroom. Moreover, many of my students are visual learners or even have special education needs that require me to give them directions both visually and orally. For these students, it is imperative that everything I say is also written out, but this can present a challenge when board space and other resources are limited.

Having an LCD projector in my classroom would allow me to provide better instruction for all of my students. As an English teacher, I often want to incorporate Power Point presentations or movie clips into my lessons, both to engage my students and to broaden their understanding of the subjects we are discussing. The projector would allow me to show students media clips and other images. Moreover, having a projector would enable me to prepare my students for life after high school, where they will inevitably encounter this type of technology; for instance, my students could create and then display their own Power Point presentations as a project for my class. Finally, the projector would allow me to post clear directions for student activities.

Having an LCD projector in my classroom would enable me to provide better, more enriching, and more engaging instruction for my students. With your help, I can provide my students with the quality of education that they deserve and need.
