Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing artists who create beautiful work. But what if they could read about artists who inspire them? It would take their work to a whole new level. Not only would these books give them artistic inspiration, but they would build literacy skills, as well.
My students are kindergarten through fifth grade artists.
They are creative and diverse. They enjoy learning about art and artists and especially love creating their own artwork. All 550 students at my school come to art once a week for 45 minutes. My school is a Title I campus, however, these funds are allocated for the core content areas and do not reach students in the fine arts.
My Project
Imagine students sitting on a carpet with soft pillows, next to a shelf FULL of books. They are sitting in pairs reading a story about an artist we have recently studied. Then they can share several new facts with the class that we did not cover in the large group lesson. These are the types of activities I would love to be able to use to enrich my students' art education.
Donations to this project will bring new and exciting books about art and artists into my students' lives.
They will no longer have to sort through stacks of out dated non-fiction books that are above their comprehension level in the library. Having an art library will illustrate how important reading is - not just in the reading class, but in all aspects of students' lives.
