Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Has the meaning of something you have read ever been lost to you because you didn't understand the vocabulary? I see this every day in my classroom. Students are not grasping the entire meaning of the passage because they fail to understand many of the vocabulary words. Wordly Wise can fix that!

My school is an inner city Title I school in a large city.

Many of my students are English language learners, a factor that significantly contributes to their lack of academic vocabulary. All of my students receive free or reduced lunch. Due to their socioeconomic status, many of my students have not had the opportunities that some of their peers from wealthier schools have had. As a result, their vocabulary has suffered as they have not been given the same chances to acquire new words through direct hands-on experiences. I teach gifted language arts and reading, so my students are naturally bright and inquisitive and learn quickly.

My Project

Wordly Wise books will be used to teach advanced-level vocabulary. The Wordly Wise books will be used for whole group and small group instruction. The Wordly Wise website will also be used to complement the books. The books present the students with the definitions of the vocabulary words, and also allow the students to practice the words with exercises. In addition, each unit has a story that includes all the vocabulary words and gives the students the opportunity to see how the words are used in context. The use of Wordly Wise in the classroom will help my students increase their English language vocabulary, which is directly related to them becoming better readers. I have used the Wordly Wise series in my classroom in the past, and have seen reading comprehension increase as a direct result of enriched vocabulary.

As children get older, the content they are required to read becomes more difficult.

One of the major roadblocks some students face is not understanding reading passages due of a lack of vocabulary acquisition. When children understand the majority of the words in a given selection, they have a much better chance of reading success. This can lead to increased success in all subject areas, and a life-long love of reading.
