Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a group of diverse, middle school, sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. We are at a Title l school. Most of my students come from a low socioeconomic background. I strive to have my classroom accessible and equitable, but that becomes a challenge when resources are limited.
My students are current and future scientists who are excited to learn about the world around them through curiosity, observation, data collection, and application.
My students are all eager to learn and make self-discoveries in science. They come to school knowing that it's a safe place where they can create meaningful connections with their peers and teachers. They come with little to no background knowledge of the science content, but they are willing and strive to soak up all the knowledge that is presented to them. My students are wonderful young men and women who are ready to take on the world.
My Project
As a teacher, I am always looking for ways to engage students in a meaningful and fun way. One of those ways are brain teasers. More than entertaining, there are cognitive benefits as students try to solve the puzzles and also work cooperatively towards a solution. Brain teasers keeps the mind sharp, improves concentration, are short enough to combat short attention span, challenging enough to be interesting without the frustration, and helps students develop new problem solving skills in more creative ways. All these skills and benefits from brain puzzles are transferable to science as science requires critical thinking skills while also using creativity to solve problems (i.e. engineering). The other resources in this project are the financial literacy books and activities that I am planning to use with my advisory students. While students know the very basics of money and how to save, they often don't know how to make smart money choices can be influenced to spending by their impulses. My goal is to teach them the true value of hard earned money and hopefully teaching them to set financial goals for their future, whether that's college or saving for big purchases (i.e. car or a house).
Help keep students engaged, challenge their minds to improve their cognitive abilities, and allow them to be financially literate.
