My Project

Calm classrooms are places where students can learn. Educators have been saying for years that the learning environment matters. Students need to feel the classroom is their safe space at school where they are comfortable enough to focus. With the multitude of disabilities like attention deficit disorder, students need a place without sterile, fluorescent lights. Fluorescent lighting has long been linked to eye strain and even problematic student behavior along with its proven to not contain the full spectrum of colors that occur in natural sunlight. This causes distractions between the eye and the brain, which can lead to reading, writing, and behavioral disorders. We are not setting our students up to be able to focus.

I'm in the process of moving my classroom away from using the overhead lights and using soft lighting and sensory light to give a calmer, sensory-appropriate classroom that allows my students to be more comfortable.

I'm in the process of setting up a chill-out corner in my classroom to provide students with access to “chill-out passes” when they need to take some time away from their classmates. Providing students with these outlets to use when they’re feeling angry or upset will help them learn self-regulation and help maintain calm.

Please help me accomplish my dream of a more student-friendly classroom. With these additional supplies, the overhead lights will not be necessary.
