ENL Student Portfolios for Language and Life Goals
Help me give my students a safe space to share their stories and track their growth—with personalized binders, dividers, and even a label maker to make their learning truly their own.
This fall, I will begin my first year teaching in the United States after 14 years of teaching English Language Learners in government schools in the Middle East. My students here in Chattanooga are newly arrived teens from Guatemala. Many are living with extended family, working jobs—sometimes third shift—and managing adult responsibilities while trying to learn a new language and adapt to a new country.
I want to give them something more than worksheets and grades—I want to give them a voice.
Through this project, each student will create a personal portfolio to document their growth in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, while also tracking personal, behavioral, and executive functioning goals. These portfolios will serve as a reflection space, a confidence booster, and a record of their journey.
To make this happen, I’m requesting durable materials like binders, tabbed dividers, and sheet protectors—along with a label maker to personalize each binder and create a sense of ownership and pride. These materials will be treated with care and non-consumables will be reused year after year, handled with the respect they deserve for the effort and generosity that donors bring into our classroom. As this is my first year teaching in the U.S. after 14 years abroad, your support will helped me build a foundation for a classroom rooted in care, dignity, and hope.
